According to police, Vasu visited the Sathyabama’s house in Gobichettipalayam wielding a knife and attempted to attack her and other family members after picking up a quarrel under the influence of liquor on Thursday night.

Sathyabama was living with their son Sathya Vasanth (27) at Sri Nagar in Gobichettipalayam. “Vasu, who was upset over not being informed about Sathya Vasanth’s engagement fixed on Friday, hurled abuses and attempted to attack Sathyabama. When her brother Prabhu, 40, and son Sathya Vasanth tried to overpower him, he attempted to attack them too with the knife. Prabhu fell down in the melee,” police said.

Neighbours, on hearing the loud commotion, rushed to the rescue of the MP and her family members by forcibly taking Vasu away from the spot.

He was then handed over to the police. Police said they have recovered CCTV images showing Vasu entering the house brazenly wielding a knife.

Based on a complaint by Prabhu, the police registered a case against Vasu under IPC Section 294 (b) (uttering obscene words in public place) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation). He was arrested and produced in a court in Gobichettipalayam and later sent to prison.

All was not well between the MP and her husband over the last four years, since their fight has come out in open. In March 2016, Vasu claimed that his life was under threat from his wife.

Alleging that his wife has been conspiring to eliminate him using her political clout, Vasu levelled charges against Sathyabama that she has taken over his properties. He also claimed to have petitioned former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa seeking her intervention to help him get back his assets and ensure safety of his life. A year ago, an audio clip in which the MP and her husband were involved in a heated quarrel, went viral on WhatsApp creating a flutter in political circles.
