Speaking to the press at a meeting at the office of Makkal Needhi Maiam on Eldams Road, Kamal said that he had received an invitation from the protestors in Tuticorin and would join them on Sunday. The protest against Sterlite industries’ existing copper smelting plant and plans for its expansion has gained momentum in recent weeks.

Scores of residents have raised their voice against the industry that is seen as a major pollutant of the environment in the region. The people have complained of a range of health problems that have been taking place as a result of the activities of the factory and from working there.

When asked if he would push for shutting down of the industry, Kamal said he wishes that there be no expansion at the very least. “All laws have been flouted. We don’t want a Bhopal-like situation happening in Tuticorin,” he said.

Also commenting on the decision to conduct re-exams for CBSE students of class X and XII due to leaked question papers, he said, “The warriors (students) have done their job. They did not copy or cheat. The tension for the parents and students will be enormous. It is not fair for them to go through this for the mistake of the government.”
