Forest shocker: Four female jumbos found dead in Western TN
As many as four female jumbos were found dead in the state on Tuesday. Carcasses of two female elephants were found in the forest areas of Coimbatore and Nilgiris district, while two others were found in Erode district, Forest department sources said.

The carcass of a 30-year-old elephant was found in Melmukkai in Sirumugai forest range, they said. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the death was due to illness. The carcass of a three-year-old elephant was found in Needle Rock near Nilgiris district, they said. It was suspected to have died due to lack proper food and water, they said.Â
Meanwhile, two more female elephants were found dead in the Kadambur forest area in Erode district, forest officials said. While on a routine patrol on Monday evening in the Pavazhakuttai area in the Kadambur forest division, forest officials found an elephant lying dead in a trench. After scaring away its calf, which was nearby, they examined the carcass. They said it was a female elephant aged about 20 and had died due to illness. Similarly, the carcass of another female elephant aged about 25 was found by some forest personnel on patrol in the Anpur forest area in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. A veterinarian examined the dead pachyderm and said it had died due to illness. The carcasses were buried in the forest.
