Madurai Corporation told to act instantly on plastic waste in channels
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, on Monday, directed the Madurai Corporation Commissioner to clear the drainage channels, in its jurisdiction, of plastic waste.

Taking up the issue suo motu, based on newspaper reports which said that drainage channels in Madurai were getting choked with plastic waste which subsequently was causing severe water logging during rainy days, the court directed the urban body to take immediate action on the issue.Â
The reports said that in Pandalkudi area in Sellur, plastic waste flow into the Vaigai due to its disposal in drainage channels and the channels in Alwarpuram were blocked resulting in sewage overflow. Similarly, Arapalayam too struggles with drainage problems due to plastic waste and the locals have been facing various health problems.Â
The judges directed the corporation to initiate speedy measures and the Madurai Corporation Commissioner to submit photographs of works carried out to the High Court in seven days.
