Elderly woman thrown into sea, rescued

According to sources, the incident happened a couple of days ago when the woman, aged about 70, was begging in Manakudi. On seeing a girl playing outside her house in the village, the elderly woman had asked her to bring her some food from her house. 

As the woman spoke Malayalam, the child went inside her house and brought her mother. However, the mother mistook the woman to be a child kidnapper and raised an alarm. Her neighbours and villagers rushed to the spot and started questioning the woman. 

When she replied in Malayalam, she was attacked by the villagers. Her hands and legs were tied and a group of youth from the village took her to the sea, dropped her in the water and took photos. However, another group of youth from the same village rescued the woman and provided her food and money. 

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media and created a furore among social media users. In the video, a youth is seen carrying the woman and other youngsters who accompanied him are heard urging him to drop her in the sea as she had not bathed for several days. 

Though it has gone viral, no police action was taken against the youth involved in the incident. The act by was condemned by human rights activists. 

The incident comes in the wake of a recent occurrence in Kerala where a tribal man was beaten to death for stealing food.
