DMK members evicted from Assembly, court arrest after protest

Despite repeated warnings from the Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal over the uproar, the MLAs continued to shout slogans against the government, after which the Speaker ordered the house marshals to evacuate agitating Opposition MLAs, who in turn resorted to a road blockade on Rajaji Salai (in front of the Secretariat) resulting in traffic jam.

Later, all the protesting MLAs, including MK Stalin, were arrested by police.

Earlier, Chief Minister said that the Yatra had peacefully travelled through in other five states and accused Stalin of taking political mileage out of it. This led the Opposition legislators to enter into an altercation with their counterparts.

Moreover, the DMK MLAs came in a group and raised slogans against reply of the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Speaker Dhanapal, who sought coordination from the protesting members to continue the session, warned that he would not hesitate to take action against the protesting MLAs. “The Chief Minister clearly responded to the calling attention motion and what more else do you need?” he asked the members. However, the Speaker went to next agenda and asked Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar to introduce the Tamil Nadu Private Clinical Establishment (Regulation Act 1997) Amendment Bill. As agitating MLAs were continuously disrupting the Assembly proceedings, the Speaker directed the Assembly sergeants to remove the DMK MLAs from the house.

Later, the MLAs went outside the Secretariat and resorted to a road roko on the arterial Rajaji Salai. The members raised slogans against the government there also. Upon receiving information, top police officials reached the spot and security was beefed up in the area. Later, police detained the DMK MLAs, including Stalin.

Before boarding the police vehicle, Stalin told reporters, “The Tirunelveli Collector has clamped section 144 and the government has detained some political leaders on the ground of preventive detention. We strongly condemn the state government, which is dancing to the tune of the BJP at the Centre.”

Subsequently, Congress members led by leader of the Congress legislators KR Ramasamy staged a road blockade after Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said that even Congress-ruled Karnataka and Communist-ruled Kerala had granted permission for the Yatra and the Congress legislators should sense this.

Later, they were taken to a marriage hall, where Puducherry CM V Narayanasamy met Stalin and Congress Legislature party leader Ramasamy. Similarly, Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi MLA M Thamimun Ansari was seen walking towards the Speaker raising slogans against the Yatra. Later, he walked out of the Assembly.
