Allies, DMK oppose entry of Ramrajya Rath into state

Three AIADMK alliance partners and the lone IUML member in the Assembly had sought the state to disallow Ramrajya Rath Yatra backed by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) from entering the state. DMK working president MK Stalin too accused Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami of allowing the VHP Yatra into the state to save his post.

Stalin also urged the state government to arrest the VHP functionaries and send them back to Uttar Pradesh if they forcibly enter Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile in the Assembly, spurned on the demand to move a special call attention motion, the legislators – AIADMK allies S Karunas, Tamimum Ansari, Thaniyarasu and the DMK ally and IUML member Muhammed Abubacker KAM staged a walkout on the issue.

Speaking to reporters, Karunas wondered as to whether the state would permit a Religious Harmony Yatra in counter to Ramrajya Rath Yatra. “It is clear that the Yatra’s agenda is communal polarization,” he added.

Thaniyarasu, sought to know how was it possible for the state to permit such a communal rally, which is expected on Tuesday (March 20), to enter the state. He also wondered whether a Yatra on Tamil God Murugan would be permitted in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Ansari stated that the people from all religious groups co-exist in Tamil Nadu and this Yatra would provide for a disruption to the harmony. It is also not right to propagate the ideas relating to disputed subject and that the matter is sub-judice.

Abubacker pointed out that the rally which is expected in his constituency had raised tempers among the residents. “The Yatra, which disturbs the peace and tranquillity prevailing here should not be allowed at any cost,” he said.

An anti-saffron people’s forum had announced that leaders from various outfits including MDMK leader Vaiko, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, TVK leader T Velmurugan, NTK leader Seeman and MMK leader Prof MH Jawahirullah, would stall the Yatra. The forum had planned a road roko at the toll gate in Puliyarai junction in Sengottai.
