In a statement, the company denied the charges from activists and experts that the Pambar Shola forests that are part of Kodaikanal wildlife sanctuary would be affected unless the company undertook a world-class clean-up of the mercury contaminated factory site.

However, countering this, the company spokesperson claimed that studies by IIT Delhi and NEERI has reaffirmed that the mercury levels were within accepted range at locations outside the factory.

“The only exception is a small area on the perimeter of the factory, which HUL has already committed to remediate,” the statement added.
