Doctors doing their best to save injured in forest fire: Purohit

Purohit reached Madurai from Kanniyakumari in the morning and inquired with the doctors at the GRH about the condition of the survivors and the treatment given to them. Subsequently, he went to the burns ward and consoled the survivors. He also met their kin. Purohit assured them that doctors were doing their best to save the victims. 

Meanwhile, political parties sought a thorough probe into the trekking tragedy. The leaders demanded that those responsible for the incident be brought to book to prevent such incidents in future. 

In a statement, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, Su Thirunavukkarasar said, “The incident raises several serious questions on who permitted the trekking and whether the officials have right to give permission.” VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan demanded a judicial probe into the tragedy. 

Divya of Erode, who had sustained 100 per cent burns, died in the morning. She was newly married and she and her husband Vivek had participated in the trek to celebrate the 100th day of their marriage.

J Radhakrishnan, principal secretary, TN Health and Welfare Department, said a team of 33 doctors headed by dean of GRH, Manivannan, was looking after the survivors. Among them, 13 were still critical as they had suffered more than 50 per cent burns.
