A group of more than 50 people attached to a religious outfit vandalised a Pentecostal church at Sikkender Chavadi in Madurai on Sunday and burnt copies of the Holy Bible.

The incident happened around 9.30 am when priest Ravi Jacob was taking part in a prayer session. A gang of 50 men led by a religious outfit leader, protected by a gunman, entered the church and started attacking Jacob.Â
On seeing them, the members of the church started fleeing the religious place. The religious outfit members entered the church and ransacked the place completely. Chairs and tables were damaged and the images of Christ were also vandalised.Â
Also, copies of the Holy Bible were burnt by the gang and the mike set was looted. One of the women in the church, Bersiyal, who held the Bible close to her person was attacked. A bunch of keys was thrown at her face due to which she sustained injuries.Â
The gang did not stop with the church. They barged into three more churches in Anaiyur and threatened the members of the congregation that if prayers are conducted in the coming weeks, their church too would be attacked.Â
Following that, members of all four churches went to the Koodalpudhur Police Station and submitted a complaint demanding action against the goons.Â
In the meantime, the Alanganallur Police booked a case against three persons for damaging the church at Sikkender Chavadi.
