Raja's Periyar statue row: Kamal see it as BJP's diversionary tactics on Cauvery issue

Actor-turned-politician and Makkal Needhi Maiam Founder Kamal Haasan on Wednesday said BJP National Secretary H Raja's controversy tweet that advocated razing down of Rationalist leader Periyar's statue, might be a diversionary tactic of the BJP from the even more emotional and vexatious Cauvery issue.

"Mr Raja's statement on Periyar statue may be a tactic to divert attention of the people of Tamil Nadu over the delay in setting up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) by the BJP', he told reporters.

The Apex Court had on February 16 ruled that the CMB and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC) has to be established within six weeks and the Tamil Nadu government has been exerting pressure on the Centre on the issue, as already three weeks had passed.

Kamal said there was no need for police protection to periyar's statue and that protection should be given to those who wanted the statues to be razed down.

"Tamils are there and they will take care of the Periyar statues. We know what to do", he added.

He said Mr Raja has only expressed his regrets for the FB post, which he claimed was posted by his admin without his permission.

"Raja should have apologised. If BJP say that it is pursuing honest politics, it should take action against him immediately", he added.
