Palaniswami admitted that police face multitude of challenges following the advent of social media, in the backdrop of changes set in motion by the economic development, urbanisation, population growth, traffic congestion, among others. Encouraging the police top brass to come up with necessary proposals to modernise the police force, Palaniswami insisted the all the police station should come under the surveillance of CCTV cameras.
He also directed the police personnel in districts to compile the list of anti-social elements and pass it on to the higher-ups for further action. On maintaining the law and order, the CM observed that stray incidents pave way for a few to assail the state of having failed in maintenance of law and order, and sought the officers to prevent such stray incidents as well from recurring.
Treat people with dignity
He drew the attention to policemen evading responsibility in acting on complaints citing the jurisdiction issue. “It is imperative to treat the people with dignity when they approach police for redressal in any crime. Police should not dodge the registration of complaint for whatsoever reason, and the complaints should never be made run post-to-pillar for ‘jurisdiction’ issues”, Palaniswami said. “The credibility of the force would get a beating when deaths occur in police stations, and ensure there is no custodial deaths,” Palaniswami added.
Keep criminals from north India at bay
Palaniswami, referring to the recent spurt in criminals from north striking in the state, said the police to identify the network of anti-social elements here that truck with such criminals, and to prevent their operations.
To pre-empt jailed criminals networking with anti-social elements outside prison to orchestrate crimes, the CM suggested the officers to take joint action with prison officers.
