A similar fate also befell the former Congress leader K Kamaraj statue at Devikapuram near Chetpet town in the same district, despite the statue having been erected 27 years ago. An Ambedkar statue at Thogavadi in Chengam did not escape the attention of authorities either as the unauthorised structure was removed on the same day.Â
The Jayalalithaa statue was erected by AIADMK cadres without obtaining permission during her recent 70th birth anniversary celebrations. While the statues were set up last Saturday, police presence around the statue increased on Tuesday night.Â
When word of the proposed removal spread, partymen gathered at the spot and sat in dharna resulting in the cops arresting 75 of them. In a similar incident at Arni, around 200 cadres were arrested following an altercation between partymen and police.Â
A similar fate befell an Ambedkar statue at Thogavadi village near Chengam where the statue set up years ago was kept covered due to lack of official sanction. VCK cadres unveiled it on February 23 midnight. The statue was removed and taken to the Chengam taluk office.
