The orders were passed on to courts in Jaffna and Oorkavalpadai and they would be issued after the fishermen are produced in the respective courts.

Initially, the Lankan government had approved the release of 113 fishermen who were arrested till January but four of them were released on an emergency basis after the son of one of the fishermen died. Though the release orders were expected earlier this week, due to political confusion in the country, there was a delay. This is the second instance since December last, when a large number of Tamil Nadu fishermen were being released simultaneously.

Last December, 89 fishermen were released. However, fishermen sources said the mass release was due to the visit of Lankan PM Rani Wickremesinghe to India on Saturday. Meanwhile, after the official confirmation, the fishermen in Rameswaram withdrew their indefinite strike plan and the proposed road roko of Pamban bridge.
