Shifting schools to be easier for students with smart cards
The State government is gearing up to complete data compilation in Educational Management Information System (EMIS), a one-stop online portal for school authorities, to roll out its ambitious ‘smart card’ scheme for every student from the ensuing academic year.

Official sources said that the state was pulling out all the stops to ensure that it reaches every student in the state. Once rolled out, the transfer of students between schools would become seamless. The data belonging to the student seeking transfer would be released to the common pool based on the admitting school and can be subsequently added to data of the admitting school. EMIS paves way for district-level transfer of students as well.
The online portal would provide for education content service, SMS-based attendance monitoring system and intra-departmental communication services system.
Sources said efforts were on to gather details of every other student in state, and to bring them on board of EMIS for seamless integration of services offered by the School Education department. The unique data generated under EMIS would have details of the student’s name, address, contact details of either guardian or parents, and Aadhaar number, besides block name, category of the school, management of the school, and the directorate under which the school functions. It would also capture academic details to track retention and completion of secondary education.
Complementing the online portal, the School Education department has launched an android App - EMIS – TAMILNADU which would be the only source for photo upload and for approval of ID card. School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan is learnt to have insisted that the compilation of the students’ data be completed soon, to facilitate the issue of ‘smart cards’.
