    CM Palaniswami lays foundation stone for Udangudi Critical Thermal Power Project

    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday laid foundation stone for unit I of the much awaited 1,320-MW Super Critical Thermal Power Project at Udangudi in Tuticorin district, through video-conference.

    Palaniswami said the first phase of the project was expected to be commissioned in 2020-21, as per the agreement signed with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Detailing the steps taken by the state to augment power generation, he said projects to the tune of 6,200 MW with an outlay of Rs 46,821 crore has been taken up. “In addition, steps are in place to set up new plants to the tune of 9,300 MW at a cost of Rs 53,890 crore,” the CM noted. The CM recalled the promise made by former CM Jayalalithaa on changing the power situation in the state. Underscoring the need for uninterrupted power supply as a crucial parameter for global investors to set their shops here, the CM detailed the power situation in the state. 

    “The total power production in 2010 in the state was pegged at 16,873 mw as installed capacity. This has overtime had increased to 29,492 mw,” he observed.Citing the improvement in power situation, the CM noted that the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) has emerged first in the country in laying High Tension lines while second in enhancing the energy efficiency of sub-power stations here.

    Earlier, the Deputy CM O Panneerselvam recalled as to how the Udangudi project, which was earlier shelved, was revived despite the obstacles posed by the opposition. Appointment orders were handed over by the CM and Deputy CM to 894 field staff of the Corporation.
