TN architects’ poster on culture is the best of 18 entries in national contest
The Tamil Nadu chapter of the IIA (Indian Institute of Architects) has done the state proud in the latest national meet by finishing third in the IAPL cricket tournament – Indian Architects’ Premier League – and by coming first in the design poster contest, that pays tribute to the state’s rich history and culture.
Chennai
Contested among architects from 18 different states across India, the event which was held in Ahmedabad witnessed 16 selected architects from various cities in TN form a team TN Kaalais and take on other teams from other states.
“The entire campaign was about showcasing Tamil Nadu’s diversity and culture to the rest of India. Even our ‘TN Kaalai’ logo for the event was derived as such – it even features the ‘jallikattu bull’ and the Central Station as a true blue Heritage building from South India.
It was a great opportunity to bond with architects from all over TN also – places such as Tiruchy, Salem, Coimbatore, and discuss the importance of conserving our buildings across the state,” said Mohseen Baig from Chennai, who was one of the integral members in the TN team.
Though the architects take great pride in reaching the semi-finals of the cricket tourney, the real reason to cheer was being recognised for the best depiction of the state’s culture – amongst 17 other competitors.
“It’s a world that is changing everyday and the importance paid to our art and culture keeps receding. In our design poster, we have depicted the efforts of a young man trying to hold on to the cherished nostalgia behind age old customs; be it with respect to food, music, attire, daily rituals, and so on. A jallikattu bull also is seen in the poster – in an abstract manner,” Mohseen added, who was the brain behind the innovative design.
