CM lauds UNESCO award to Srirangam Temple
The renovation of the temple began in June 2014 at the behest of former CM J Jayalalithaa at a cost of about Rs 25 crore and the massive project was executed in phases, under the guidance of experts in archaeology for over a year.

Palaniswami met a delegation from Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple led by its trustee Venu Srinivasan and lauded the Temple’s feat of winning the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit 2017 for cultural heritage conservation.
Palaniswami noted that the temple bagged the award from a jury comprising nine international conservation experts, which considered conservation projects from 10 countries in the Asia Pacific region. The jury inspected the temple between August 9 and August 11.
The renovation of the temple began in June 2014 at the behest of former CM J Jayalalithaa at a cost of about Rs 25 crore and the massive project was executed in phases, under the guidance of experts in archaeology for over a year.
The temple, considered the oldest and foremost of the 108 divyadesams, is housed on a sprawling 156-acre campus, with 7 prakaras and 21 towers, including the majestic 236-feet-high rajagopuram.
CM hands over Rs 1 crore solatium to kin of slain Inspector Periyapandian
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami gave away a cheque for Rs 1 crore to the family of Inspector Periyapandian, who was killed last month in Rajasthan while attempting to nab the suspects in a gold heist case reported in the city.
Periyapandian’s wife Banurekha received the cheque from Palaniswami, at the Secretariat.
On December 13, Periyapandian, was killed in a shoot-out in Rajasthan’s Pali district. Peiyapandian who was serving in Law & Order wing at Maduravoyal police station, was part of a special team which went to nab the suspects who were reportedly involved in a gold heist from a jewel shop here. The government had announced Rs 1 crore as relief to the family of Periyapandian besides its decision to bear the educational expenses of Periyapandian’s two sons – Ruben and Rahul.
Initially, the state claimed that the Inspector was shot down by the culprits. Later, reports suggested that the deceased could have been killed in a friendly fire. In the recent session of the Assembly, CM had informed that Periyapandian’s death mystery would be solved once the investigation ended. The CM, who also holds the home portfolio, had said, “How Periyapandian died would be known after the investigation concludes.”
Omandurar’s birthday becomes state festival
The birth anniversary of former CM OP Ramaswamy Reddiyar would be celebrated as a government festival from henceforth at Villupuram, said Chief Minister Palaniswami. Freedom fighter Ramaswamy Reddiyar was fondly known as Omandurar, as he hailed from Omandur a small village near Tindivanam and was the first CM of Madras Presidency after Independence.
He became the CM in 1947 and was in power till 1949. The Madras Temple Entry Authorization Act 1947, the Devadasi Dedication Abolition Act 1947, and the Tamil Nadu Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act 1948, were passed during his tenure. To celebrate his contributions towards the state, Palaniswami had issued orders facilitating the celebrations of his birth anniversary on February 1.
