Shockingly, the patronage for buses have dipped by 90 percentage immediately after the hike. The reason for this massive slump is evident from a quick comparison – as per the revised rates, the bus fare from Rameswaram to Madurai is Rs 147, whereas it is Rs 35 for the same journey by train.

Similarly, the new bus fare between Chennai and Rameswaram is Rs 600, but by train the tickets cost is Rs 190.

Selvakumar, a retired SI of police department at Rameswaram, said that he used to frequently travel between Ramanthapuram and Rameswaram by bus. Before the hike the ticket was priced at Rs 32 and now it was Rs 47. However, on the first day of the revised fare Rs 62 was collected, he said.

“Due to the hike, trains to Rameswaram are overcrowded and it will be of great help to people if more services are operated, said Selvakumar.

Rameswaram is one of the important tourist destinations in southern districts. Most of the tourists, who visit Rameswaram, come by bus from Madurai and neighbouring towns owing to the high frequency.
