Corruption rampant in Tiruvalluvar univ, alleges staff union
Tiruvalluvar University Employees Union (TUEU) has alleged that corruption was rampant in the institution.
Vellore
Submitting a 5-page petition (copy available with DTNext) to Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is also the Chancellor of the university, at the circuit house here, I Ilangovan, honorary president of TUEU, said the institution suffered heavy loss after the contract for answer scripts was
awarded to a private firm.
“In 2013, Rs 13 lakh was spent for this work per semester, but the cost now has increased to around Rs 2.46 crore. The awarding of the contract to the private firm for seven semesters is against rules”, he said. Ilangovan said the quality of education suffered as only 1,846 of the 7,000 teachers in the university’s 112 colleges had NET, SLET or PhD qualifications.
Ilangovan also charged that the university refused to reinstate the 61 ousted employees despite court orders. Yet another major issue was the bribe taken by a staff promising an assistant professor post to a person. S Senthamarai of Tondiarpet in his petition to the governor claimed that A Paneerselvam of the university zoology department and his associate had taken Rs 25 lakh promising to get her assistant professor’s post in the university and paid back only a part of the amount.
When contacted, university exams controller B Senthilkumar acknowledged the Senthamarai case. Regarding other issues, he said association members had ulterior motives and were trying to tarnish the university’s name by levelling such allegations.
