Kanni’, a type of native hound, with ferocious looks, is adept to hunting and is very faithful to those who rear it. Though it is slim and tall, it is powerful and can really be fast on its prey. It can jump across a 6-foot tall fence with ease.

With awareness for native breeds growing among the youth in TN, owners of the ‘Kanni’ dogs, mostly from rural areas formed a WhatsApp group six months ago. They have been sharing pictures of dogs and some interesting titbits about them.

It was then, the group members came up with the idea of conducting a dog show exclusively for ‘Kanni’ dogs.

Prabhu from Amur took the lead, collected funds for the dog show and made it a success.

The show featured 50 dogs, mostly from Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. Every owner was given a separate chamber under the shamiana and dogs were provided food and water periodically. The dogs were judged on various parameters.

Sasijothi from Marudhapuram village near Nettur in Sivaganga district, who owns six ‘Kanni’ dogs, said that the dogs are obedient and faithful. “They do not need any special food and taking care of them is an easy task,” he said.

Similarly, Mahesh from Pannamparai village near Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district said that their family has been owning ‘Kanni’ dogs for many generations and they are very good in hunting.

“However, with the government imposing restrictions, the canines are not used for hunting anymore.”

Prabhu, organiser of the event, also runs a team called ‘Kanni Tamilanin Perumai Nanbargal Kuzhu’. He said the response to the show was not good as it has been organised for the first time and awareness was not much among the people.

“However, in the coming years all the ‘Kanni’ dog owners will be invited and the show will serve as a platform where interested buyers can meet dog owners to buy ‘Kanni’ puppies,” he said.
