    Plant 20 saplings for razed tamarind tree, Collector told

    The Madras High Court has directed plantation of 20 saplings in the place of a tamarind tree that is set to be removed for the construction of a drainage at JN Street in Tiruvallur.

    A division bench headed by Justice M Venugopal passed the direction while disposing of a plea seeking for a direction to the Tiruvallur Collector to take immediate and stern action on their May 15, 2017, representation in removing encroachments put up by Sundarajan and two others and to complete the drainage canal deserted by the administration half-way.

    The bench, in its order, said, “As it is a case of encroachment, the trio have no locus standi to continue in the encroached place. The bench then directed the Collector to remove the green tree(s), including the said tamarind tree and also the encroachment in question and ensure that 20 saplings are planted in and around the place. 

    On directing the authorities to complete the drainage work within two months from the date of removal of such trees and encroachment, the bench sought the authorities to ensure that the planted saplings, shall not in any way damage the drainage system at a later date.
