    Avaniyapuram winner’s unique gesture

    ‘Modakathan’ Mani alias Manikanda Prabhu, who was adjudged the best bull tamer in Avaniyapuram jallikattu on Sunday, has come forward to donate the prizes won by him for charity.

    Avaniyapuram Jallikattu was conducted on the day of Pongal and it was inaugurated by state Ministers RB Udayakumar, Sellur K Raju and C Vijayabaskar.

    In the event, ‘Modakathan’ Mani tamed eight bulls in the first four rounds and was adjudged the best. Though, he did not participate in the next two rounds, as his count was high compared to others, he was adjudged as the best bull tamer.

    He was given a shield and Rs 10,000 by Minister C Vijayabaskar apart from the prizes that he won by taming eight bulls. After receiving the prizes, he said that he has decided to donate all that he had earned in various jallikattu events for charity. He had the habit of donating part of his prizes to needy people but this time he had decided to donate all his prizes for charity.

    In the jallikattu held at Avaniapuram, as many as 954 bulls were registered, though only 704 were admitted. But, due to paucity of time, only 430 were allowed to enter the vadivasal.

    Similarly, 623 bull tamers got registered and 576 were admitted. Out of them 97 were rejected and 479 were present. In the event, 24 suffered injuries and six were referred to the Madurai GRH.

    The bulls were brought to the vadivasal after the safety pledge was taken. With the active participation of bull tamers all the rules were strictly followed and therefore the time was relaxed

    till 4 pm.
