A resolution was also adopted on the ongoing transport workers’ strike. “Even though the strike is going on for four days, the government remains passive without disbursing arrears, people have largely been affected. The government should immediately call the union leaders and hold talks for finding out a lasting solution,” it stated.

“The Centre has to declare Kanniyakumari district as a ‘disaster hit’ area and release relief funds immediately for taking up rehabilitation,” said a resolution. The meeting also demanded the Centre to provide compensation to the families of fishermen who were affected by Cyclone Ockhi.

The DMK leaders strongly condemned the Governor’s review meetings in various districts. “It is highly condemnable that a Governor is violating the Constitutional norms by holding official talks with the district administrations, which is against the state’s autonomy,” read another resolution.

The meeting demanded the government to waive off farmers’ loans. “With the North-East monsoon giving less rainfall in the state, farmers have struggled to take up cultivation and they have mortgaged jewels to obtain loans, which should be written off,” it said.

Another resolution praised former telecom minister A Raja and MP Kanimozhi for proving that they were not corrupt in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

DMK, Congress MLAs go into a huddle ahead of Assembly

With the Assembly session beginning on Monday, the main opposition party the DMK and its ally the Congress conducted consultation meetings here on Sunday.

All the DMK MLAs headed by party working president MK Stalin went into a huddle at the party headquarters and discussed various issues like ongoing strike, Cyclone Ochki and farmers’ issues, which are likely to be raised in the session.

Party sources said that the DMK may boycott Governor’s speech in the Assembly and the MLAs have been instructed to raise their constituency issues. Similarly, Congress MLAs conducted a meeting in their office. Addressing reporters, TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar said, “If the DMK is bringing a no-confidence motion, the Congress will support it and our MLAs will also raise many public issues.”
