Coimbatore
The rural police here launched ‘Alpha’ bike squads on Friday, with an aim to enhance patrolling to prevent crimes in the city.
As many as 20 bikes will be used by the city police personnel to patrol the city and suburban areas to prevent crimes such as chain snatching. The cops will also attend to emergencies like accidents swiftly.
“As it is easy to move through traffic on a 2-wheeler, the squads will reach the accident spots quickly and help the injured victims reach hospitals before the golden hour. The bikes will help in easy movement and nab offenders deftly,” said Superintendent of Police Pa Moorthy, Coimbatore district. Four police personnel will use a bike. Two cops will patrol their jurisdiction in the siren-fitted bike and they will work in two shifts. The bikes are also equipped with a first aid kit, flash light and helmets. Inspector General of Police, West Zone, A Pari, flagged off the bike squad at the Armed Reserve Ground, while SP Moorthy distributed helmets to the cops.
