In the first incident, Annalakshmi (60) from Pudhuthamaraipatti village in Madurai district had met with a road accident on Saturday and died on Sunday at the Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital.

After the post-mortem, the body was draped in a white cloth and handed over to the kin.

Later, it was taken to the burial ground. When it was about to be buried, the kin found that it was not Annalakshmi’s body.

They immediately took it back to Madurai GRH and began a quarrel protest with the mortuary workers, saying they had exchanged the dead body.

But, sources at Madurai GRH said that the kin had seen the dead body before it was handed over to them. But, the kin claimed that the workers had showed the body in a hurried manner and they could not see it clearly.

Sources also said that the body was exchanged with Karpagaselvi (30) from Chathirapatti near Oomachikulam. Karpagaselvi had committed suicide by self-immolation and had died on Sunday.

The kin of Karpagavalli too noticed the body only in the burial ground.

They too returned the body in the evening and staged a protest near the mortuary. However, after proper verification, the bodies were handed over to the respective kin.
