Wild animals kill 10, injure three sheep near Kovilpatti
Wild animals, suspected to be either jackals or foxes, had killed 10 sheep and left three more injured at Thonugal, close to the forest boundary, near Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district, on Sunday. People of the village were shocked at the incident as they fear more such carni vores would huntdown the domesticated animals.

The dead sheep belonged to Gurusamy, of Thonugal. Gurusamy ha 65 sheep and every day after grazing them he used to take them to the pen, where he locked them in three sheds.Â
The pen is in a farm about three kilometres from his house. He locked them up in the pen on Saturday evening as usual. When he woke up on Sunday morning, he was shocked to see 10 sheep dead and three more battling for life. He immediately informed the police and veterinary department officials. Following that, doctors from veterinary hospital at Villiseri under veterinarian Selvi rushed to the spot and treated the injured animals. She said that the sheep could have been attacked by jackals or foxes. She also said that the injuries did not look like ones caused by dogs and also added that at least three or four animals could have attacked the herd. The carnivore could be identified only after an autopsy and the carcasses were taken to the veterinary hospital at Villiseri.
