Ramnath Kovind visited Ramathaswamy Temple and Kalam memorial on December 23. The Highways Department re-laid the roads near the temple at the eleventh hour.

As a result, Middle street and all four Car streets, road from Agnitheertham to Sangumal, where government guest house is located, got a makeover. Close to 2.5 kilometres of new roads were laid on December 22.

They were laid so carelessly, with little importance on quality, that they were damaged within four days. Mani, a resident of West Car Street at Rameswaram, said that the road was laid overnight.

As a result, the road developed potholes. Especially two deep pits developed on the side of Middle road.

As they are not clearly visible in the night, motorists find it difficult to commute the stretch and there is every possibility of them having a fall and suffering serious injuries, said Mani.

C R Senthilvel, CPI (M) functionary at Rameswaram, said that just two days before laying a new road, a private mobile operator had laid underground cables and he had not closed the road properly.

The state highways department without noticing it had laid gravel on top of it in haste.

As a result, pot holes have developed in various places within a span of just four days. Government cannot be so careless with people’s money and take a callous approach towards the issue, rued Senthilvel.
