In a first, all the flyovers in Coimbatore city will be closed for traffic using barricades on New Year’s Eve. This includes the flyovers on Avinashi Road, Gandhipuram and North Coimbatore flyovers.
Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi said about 1500 police personnel including Home Guards will be deployed for security on New Year eve.
She assured that presence of police personnel will be felt by the public in places such as VOC Park Grounds, Coddisia Grounds and on arterial roads, where large numbers are expected to congregate.
Special police teams have been formed to curb drunken driving, over speeding and preventing youth from over indulgence during the celebrations.
Vehicle checks will be strictly carried out at nearly 22 check posts across the city. Those who flout traffic rules will be counselled by experts, informed Lakshmi.
The cops have also warned against any display of obscenity in the name of organising parties by pubs and hotels.
While Tasmac outlets should be shut as usual at 10 pm, clubs, resorts and high-end hotels have been advised not to stretch their celebrations beyond midnight.
The hotels have been asked to ensure the safety of public by not erecting any stage near swimming pools.
“Also hotels shouldn’t permit revellers from driving their vehicles drunk after celebrations.
They should take up the responsibility of dropping their customer’s home by hiring drivers,” said Lakshmi.
The public have also been advised to desist from teasing women in the name of celebrations.
Firing crackers in public places has also been banned, added Lakshmi.
