According to police, Rajagopal, a realtor of Thanjavur New housing unit area, had borrowed Rs 1. 20 crore from Ravichandran (58), a retired Sub-Inspector of police of the same area who has been running a lodge near Thanjavur new bus stand. It is said that he had also been financing business persons.
When Rajagopal died on July 8, 2016, his son Subramaniam (55), repaid a sum of Rs. 1.94 crore which also included the interest. Using threats, Ravichandran had allegedly forced Subramaniam to transfer some of his property in his name. Despite the fact that Subramaniam had repaid the money with interest, Ravichandran did not return his documents for the properties and demanded a few more lakh as interest. It is said, that repeated appeals made by Subramaniam had gone futile. He, therefore, approached the Thanjavur Medical College police on Monday.Â
Based on a complaint by Subramaniam, the Thanjavur Medical College police on Monday registered a case under various sections of the Tamil Nadu Money Lenders Act.Â
The police subsequently arrested Ravichandran, who was later remanded in judicial custody.
