Lankan boat found in Ramnad; Probe on
A Sri Lankan boat which was found anchored in Serankottai coastal village near Rameswaram on Tuesday triggered panic among fishermen and the police since the President Ramnath Kovind, would be visiting Rameswaram soon.
Madurai
Fishermen from Serankottai saw a stranded fibre boat and informed the Marine police and the Q branch. They rushed to the spot and carried out investigation and claimed that it was an old boat.Â
Police said that initially there were doubts about whether it was used for smuggling or by Sri Lankan fishermen to reach Rameswaram. But, later they said that it was seized by the Marine police three years ago and was tied at the Sangumal beach. Due to rough seas, it has been washed to Serankottai beach.
However, sources inside the police department said that the colour of the boat that was seized earlier was different. Also, it was taken to the Marine police station. Also, it is widely believed by sources that in order to ward off unnecessary controversies during the President’s visit, the Marine police and the Q branch did not part with the much-needed information on the issue.
