Ahead of the arrival of the Governor at the tourist bungalow, members of the DMK and VCK, carrying black flags, staged a protest demonstration, alleging that he was interfering with the State administration.

The agitation was led by former Minister MRK Panneerselvam, who alleged that the Governor's action was an affront on State autonomy.

He also alleged that the Governor, instead of doing his duty, was doing the job of the Minister.

A large number of police personnel were deployed in the district to maintain law and order and in view of the agitation by the DMK members, who blocked the path to Cuddalore bus terminus and head post office.

Through traffic on the busy stretch was affected following the protest.

Following this, the Governor had to change his plan and went to Vandipalayam, discussed about the Clean India campaign and reviewed various schemes which were being implemented in the district with the officials.

The Governor also visited Ambedkar Nagar and interacted with the people about the basic amenities like drinking water, road and other facilities, heard their grievances and received petitions from them.

He also noted down the needs of the people.

Mr Purohit reached Cuddalore district yesterday by train.

He had earlier announced that he would tour the state and interact with representatives of various sections of people.

The newly-appointed Governor stirred a hornet's nest when he chaired a meeting of senior officials and reviewed the implementation of various Central and state government schemes during his visit to Coimbatore in November, triggering strong opposition from the DMK and other opposition parties, who alleged that it went against the concept of federalism.

Most parties, barring the BJP and AIADMK, came down heavily on the Governor, accusing him of attempting to interfere with the administration of the elected government in the state.

The Governor defended his action and said he was acting well within the rights given to him by the Constitution.
