Easterlies return; rain likely after two days

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, since the depression that formed moved up towards North Bay, the wind pattern has not been conducive for coastal Tamil Nadu, leading to a dry phase in the northeast monsoon. “The returning easterlies may bring light rains over coastal Tamil Nadu. While Delta and the southern districts might get rain from Friday morning, Chennai may have to wait for a couple of days more,” said an RMC official.

Further, satellite images over the Bay have started to pick up moderate thunderstorms in the sea to the SouthEast of Chennai, an indication of the improving Easterly winds, the weather expert said.

Some parts of interior south Tamil Nadu will receive moderate rainfall, with wind instabilities resulting in a spell or two of rains though it may not be widespread.

K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger said, “For the next couple of days, though the winds are still, there is going to be a little change to the North, hence keeping the rainfall opportunities lower.

Around Saturday, the wind pattern further improve, bettering the rainfall possibilities for coastal areas.”

Chennai possibly will have to wait for a couple of more days to see light rains to return once again, even as Delta districts and coastal areas of South parts recorded light rains on Thursday, he added.
