Training in emergency protocol under way

With Tamil Nadu having the dubious distinction of being a state with the maximum number of Road Traffic Accidents (RTA), the need for government hospitals to be strengthened in RTA management is the need of the hour.

Trauma and Accidental Emergency Initiative (TAEI)

The Health department, had, earlier this year, launched the Trauma and Accidental Emergency Initiative (TAEI), under which Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai, and Government Hospitals at Villupuram, Perambalur, Cuddalore and Tambaram were selected as pilot hospitals. It has now been expanded to 68 more hospitals.

Stating that the initiative requires immense training of nurses, which is being undertaken, Draez Ahmed, Director, National Health Mission, said, “TAEI is the coming together of a lot of systems. We also have an app, which is basically a reporting software, in which we get information about the emergency cases coming to each of the linked hospitals.”

With the integration of prehospital and in- hospital care, the initiative is expected to be fully in place by the end of next year. “Last month, the Christian Medical College, Vellore, had conducted three rounds of training for nurses under this programme. We are following the emergency management protocol of CMC,” he stated, adding, that it is mandated that every House Surgeon passing out of Tamil Nadu from next year should be familiar with the state’s protocol.
