Solution for unemployment lies in farming: Anna Hazare
Ruling governments always have industries in their mind as solution to the problem of unemployment, but it actually lies in sustainable development of water resources and farming, said social activist Anna Hazare, here on Sunday.
Madurai
Speaking at the three-day ‘National Consultation on Restoration of Environmental Flow of Rivers, Alternative Ways to Share and Manage River Basin Water Resources’ he said that the government here has least concern for farmers.
He quoted the example of the government fixing the rate for agriculture produce. When an expert committee of a state decides the rate for farmers, the central government halves it. As the rates could not be matched, farmers could not meet their ends and began ending their lives. “In the last 22 years 12 lakh farmers have committed suicide,” said Anna Hazare. He also said that his native village Ralegaon Siddhi once was seeping in poverty and people had to trek for 6 km to break stones. But, 18 years ago, they took up a pledge to develop the village. Initially, they improved their water resources and then other resources such as farming and dairy improved automatically.
Today, the village supplies a large quantity of vegetables and milk to many places.
To reiterate on their efforts, he said that a youth, who owns 22 cattle in his village, gets a monthly profit of Rs 45, 000. “Even government officials cannot have this much money in their kitty after all their monthly expenses,” he explained.
However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, have only industries in mind as a solution to unemployment, but the true solution lies in effective water management and providing sustainable farming practices.
NABARD to issue 40 lakh RuPay cards to farmers
To relieve farmers from the clutches of usury, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) would provide 40 lakh RuPay cards to farmers of Tamil Nadu, said S Nagoor Ali Jinnah, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Chennai, at Madurai, on Sunday. Delivering his address at the ‘National Consultation on Restoration of Environmental Flow of Rivers, Alternative Ways to Share and Manage River Basin Water Resources’, Jinnah said that watershed management is vital for better yields and many farmers are successful after following rational water shed management plans. He also said that if cropping pattern is adopted there would be no drought. To combat the menace of usury, 40 lakh RuPay cards would be issued to the farmers with 7 per cent interest. In the first year, 20 lakh cards would be issued and in the second year the remaining 20 lakh cards would be issued.
