Several fishermen, who were struck by the cyclone in the mid-sea, were stranded in uninhabited island of Lakshadweep and the nearby coastal areas. Though more than 3,000 fishermen were rescued by armed forces, yet 1,000 fishermen are to be traced. As the rescue operation is still continuing, 27 fishermen in two mechanised boats reached Thengapattinam coast.

One of the fishermen Judes said that they had no idea about the cyclone before venturing into the sea and were caught by Ockhi all of a sudden.

They went in two boats but in one of their boats the diesel got dried up. They said that they reached the coast after much struggle and claimed that they saw five bodies of fishermen floating in the sea in a decomposed state.

Speaking to DT Next, Justin Antony of International Fishermen Development Trust alleged that the State government is refusing to release the number of deceased fishermen.

“Many of them are yet to be traced even a week after the cyclone and the State and Central governments should step up the rescue measures,” demanded Justin Antony.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of one of the fishermen, identified as Jude of Thoothukudi was brought to his village. He died near Cochin coast and his body was kept at Thiruvananthapuram GH.

In the evening, Rameswaram fishermen went on a rally and tried to stage a rail roko at Pamban, but were stopped.
