The construction of a memorial at the burial site of former president APJ Abdul Kalam at Peikarumbu began in the year 2016 at the cost of Rs 15 crore and it was inaugurated on his second death anniversary.
The memorial has three wings, with the wax statues installed in the left wing and a statue of Kalam playing veena and his burial site in the centre wing. In the right wing, many of the paintings, statues and things used by Kalam are present.
Though the memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi July this year, the left wing remained closed. It houses more than 10 wax statues of Kalam. Prominent among them are Kalam interacting with children and leaders of various countries.
There is also a statue of Kalam falling down, which was taken at a function at Chennai.
Sources at DRDO said that the wax statues which were kept locked would be opened for tourists from January.
However, the date of opening would be decided only after Christmas, said the sources.
