The Madras High Court has been moved seeking to restrain the State from permitting ‘rekla race’ or bullock cart races involving bovine bulls and take suitable legal action against persons organising, conducting and participating in such events in accordance with law.

The first bench comprising Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice R. Hemalatha directed the State to file counter on the issue and posted the case for orders without offering a date.

The petitioner Ramesh of Chennai Samuga Vizhipunarchi Trust, had contended that despite the Supreme Court’s specific ban of rekla races as acts of cruelty as defined in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCTA) inside Tamil Nadu, the races are being conducted with impunity in utter disregard to law in many places in Tamil Nadu sometimes even in government functions.

In these races the bulls harnessed to the carts are abused, with shouting and jeering by crowds.
