    2 killed, 30 hurt as TNSTC bus veers off road near Avinashi

    Two persons were crushed to death and more than 30 passengers suffered injuries after the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus in which they were travelling suddenly veered off the road and rolled down a slope near Avinashi in Tirupur district on Sunday.

    The accident happened on Sunday afternoon when the bus with 40 passengers was heading to Annur near Coimbatore from Tirupur district. “The bus had just crossed a bridge near Attayampalayam, when its driver lost control and the vehicle rolled down a 20 feet slope,” police said.

    In the mishap, 70- year-old Sundarappan from Thanneerpandalpalayam and Kanagaraj, 55, from Thekkalur were crushed to death on the spot and over 30 passengers were seriously injured.

    On receiving information, the Avinashi police along with the public rescued the injured and rushed them to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and Tirupur Government Hospital for treatment. Efforts are on to retrieve the bus, which has been lying almost 20 feet down the road.

    The Avinashi police have registered a case and an enquiry is on to know the circumstances, which led to the accident.

    In another incident, two persons died after their bikes collided head on in Tirupur. Police said Selvaraj, 32, from Palladam was heading to a temple, when another bike driven by Muhammed Ashik, 20, from Vadukankalipalayam rammed his vehicle.

    Selvaraj and Muhammed died on the spot, while the latter’s friend Abdulla suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to a hospital in Coimbatore. The Anupperpalayam police have registered a case.
