    Though rains subsided in Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari on Friday, the death toll increased to nine, including two in Tirunelveli.

    Vimal Singh of Burliar Estate and Rathinasamy of Painkulam in Kanniyakumari district, died after a tree fell on them. In another incident, Thiagarajan, of Vadaseri in Kanniyakumari district, drowned in a tank.

    In Tirunelveli district, two persons, Kalaiarasi, of Parparammalpuram near Nanguneri and an unidentified man, died of electrocution.

    The fury of cyclone was so severe that power and cell phone connections were lost in many parts of Kanniyakumari district There was utter chaos throughout the district.

    Traffic was crippled and electricity supply was not restored in most places.

    Adding to the woes of the residents, roads and bridges collapsed. The Suseendram bridge which connects Nagercoil and Kanniyakumari collapsed bringing traffic between the two towns to a standstill.

    Many residential areas in Nagercoil water were inundated and residents were stranded inside their houses. They were rescued by boats and taken to relief camps.

    However, in the rescue camps, food and water did not reach the inmates on time and the elderly suffered due to paucity of medicines. Passengers who were stranded at the Nagercoil railway station complained of non-availability of drinking water.

    Papanasam receives 45 cm 

    Many places in southern districts received more than 100 mm of rainfall on Friday and among them Papanasam topped the chart with 451 mm of rainfall followed by Manimutharu with 378 mm. The rainfall in more than 20 places exceeded the limit of 100 mm of rainfall.

    80 fishermen rescued by ICG
    Close to 80 fishermen who had gone for deep sea fishing were rescued by Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Nine ICG ships and a Dornier helicopter were pressed into rescue operation. In the rescue services, 79 fishermen who were stranded at various places in mid-sea were rescued. According to sources, still close to 250 fishermen are stranded in mid sea and three are missing. It is said that more than 100 country boats were damaged in the cyclone.
