Tiruchy, Thanjai ryots demand water, crop insurance money
Despite officials claiming that all the 17 water channels in the district are completely desilted, farmers at the monthly grievance meet here, on Thursday, alleged that none of them have been dredged. “As a result, river water has not reached the tail ends of the canals, said Ayilai Sivasuriyan, district secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, Tiruchy.

“Only some parts of the old and new Kattalaimettu channels, Uyyakondan and others canals have been dredged. This has spoiled our samba dreams, he said. Farmers have applied for crop loan for the failed season.
Despite paying the dues, none of the farmers have got the crop insurance amount, added Ayilai.
P Ayyakannu, state president of Desiya Thennindia Nadigal Inaiappu Vivasayigal Sangam, stated that banks are not providing loan on time. The Tiruchy agri-department has failed to complete the previous year target of cultivating paddy in 45,000 hectares in the current samba season. This year cultivation has been taken up on only 30, 000 hectares.
Subsequently, the farmers staged a demonstration.
In the grievance meet at Thanjavur presided by District collector A Annadurai, M Selvaraj of Annappanpettai said those who have paid their insurance premium through agriculture department officials did not receive the claims so far. He along with around 50 farmers from his village submitted petition to the district collector in this regard.
Replying to the questions A Annadurai, District collector said insurance claim of Rs. 240 crore was approved and the entire amount was paid by the insurance corporation.
The last tranche of Rs. 16 crore was received two days ago and the same is being credited to the farmers’ accounts, he explained.
