Tamil Nadu shows rise in cognizable offences, murder rate down
Tamil Nadu, as per NCRB data, is ranked third in number of cognizable crimes recorded in the year 2016. A total of 4,67,369 cases were registered by the police under IPC and Special and Local Laws. Kerala ranked top in the category with 7,07,870 cases followed by Uttar Pradesh with 4,94,025 cases.

Tamil Nadu showed a jump of 25,000 such cases when compared to previous year when the police recorded 4,42,169 cases. In IPC crimes alone, the state had recorded 1,79, 896 in the year 2016 which is lesser than 1,87,558 recorded in 2015.Â
Chennai has reported highest number of cases of cognizable crimes under Special and Local Laws, accounting for 32.9 per cent of total SLL crimes reported amongst 19 metropolitan cities followed by Kochi, 12.9 per cent and Surat 12.6 per cent during 2016. Maximum number of cases for investigation was reported in Kerala with 4,61,233 cases followed by Tamil Nadu with 3,23,007 cases for investigation and Gujarat with 3,19,680 cases during 2016. In the same period, a total of 23650 cases of property offences (worth Rs.140 crore) were reported in Tamil Nadu which included 12128 cases of thefts, 4991 cases of automobile thefts.Â
Number of murders in the state came down from 1748 in the year 2015 to 1608 in last year. Chennai has recorded 133 murders in the year 2016 while the figure was 146 in the year 2015. Among cases of extortions TN ranked 2nd in the country with 1387 cases after UP, which reported 1863 such cases.Â
