Centre’s push to set up INO in TN illegal: MDMK
MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Thursday opposed the push for India-based neutrino observatory (INO) in the Western Ghats in Theni and said the project would weaken the Mullaiperiyar and Idukki dams which are near the vicinity.

He said the project was stiffly opposed by Kerala former Chief Minister Achuthanandhan, who also opined that it would weaken the Idukki dam.
Noting that the no objection certificate granted for the project had been cancelled by the National Green Tribunal in a case filed by an environmental organisation, the MDMK general secretary said the Centre’s recent push for the project would be illegal.
The Western Ghats had been classified as an area with significance for its biodiversity by the UNESCO and 12 dams had been constructed around the area.
When the rocks of the Western Ghats are bombarded with lakhs of kilos of ammunition, it would weaken the dam structures and affect the habitat, he added.
The MDMK leader’s reaction comes in the wake of reports in a section of the media that PM was keen in retaining the INO in Tamil Nadu.
