Stability certificate must for opening Thanjai bridge
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday had directed the state government to obtain proper certificates from agencies concerned about the safety and stability before inaugurating a Railway bridge at Thanjavur.
Madurai
Petitioner Neelakandan from Thanjavur had stated that residents of the town for long had demanded a Railway overbridge at Santhapillai gate and considering the demand of the resident Rs 52 crore was allotted for constructing a new bridge in 2011.
Only the middle part of the bridge had been constructed by the Railways department and the remaining part had been constructed by the state government. As a result fissures had developed in the middle part of the bridge on November 6 and officials took some emergency measures to cover them. However, the measures had not improved the stability of the bridge.
So the bridge should be refurbished completely and Court should issue interim stay for inaugurating the bridge, prayed the petitioner. When the petition was heard by Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Nisha Banu they had directed the government to inaugurate the bridge only after obtaining stability certificate from the concerned agencies and also directed the Chief Secretary, Secretary of PWD to file counter affidavit in one week.
