Tamil short film on philately wins laurels at international film fest

A Tamil film on the lost art of philately among children has made Chennai proud, by winning honours at the recently-concluded 20th International Children’s Film Festival India(ICFFI). Directed by filmmaker B Sivakumar, Stamp Album, was inspired by a ‘60s script by acclaimed writer Sundara Ramaswamy, and produced by dancer MVN Murthy.

Speaking to DTNext, Sivakumar says, “The fest had 1,400 films from 109 countries – amongst them all, Stamp Album was adjudged among the top ten in the Asian Panorama section, and it also won the Children’s Jury award. Another special feature about the film is that it has a scene showcasing the Indian freedom struggle, narrated using only stamps.” The director animator had earlier won a National Film Award for his short film Urumattram.

The 27-minute Stamp Album was shot in Tirunelveli, and showcases the tale of two friends in school, whose obsession with collecting stamps leads to a lot of drama in their lives. In the end, their friendship, which is severely tested thanks to this hobby, comes to the fore. Stamp Album will be available soon for viewing online, the makers say.

Producer Murthy adds, “We are thrilled that it has gained so much recognition; what is more heartening is that both the adult and children’s jury loved it at the ICFFI. The audience were applauding.

There are no such films made on the art of philately, and we are glad to have spread some awareness. The fact that the traditional values the film is themed on, resonated so much with everyone is heartening. We want the film to travel to a few more international festivals, and then the plan is for my friend Sivakumar to next make a feature film.”
