Lorry driver was at fault, claim Coimbatore police

While the ruling AIADMK is facing widespread criticism from public and opposition parties for raising illegal makeshift arches on Avinashi Road that claimed the life of a techie from the US, the Coimbatore city police sought to downplay the incident by pinning the entire blame on a lorry, driven in the wrong direction resulting in mishap.

“We thoroughly scrutinised the CCTV footage to confirm that K Raghupathi, 32, from Chinniampalayam was knocked down by a rashly driven lorry coming in the wrong direction. It is not true that the victim rammed into the makeshift wooden arch before being run over by the lorry.

The lorry driver M Mohan, 31, a native of Ramanathapuram, has been arrested and remanded,” said a senior police officer.

However, cops refused to share the video with media to prove their claim. “The footage in a CCTV close to the place of incident clearly shows the lorry passing, after involving in a hit and run and taking a right turn a little distance away. A security guard is also seen in the grab. But as the case is pending in the High Court and hearing is likely on December 1, we are constrained from releasing the video,” said the official.
