PMK not for new sand quarries
Member of Parliament and state youth wing leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday urged the Chief Secretary to immediately stall the process of opening the newly announced sand quarries as it will add up to the woes of millions of farmers and cause irreparable damage to the river system.

Anbumani, in an appeal to the Chief Secretary said that he had through a representation on August 9, 2017, to the government authorities had highlighted the gross misuse of natural resources.
Despite that the government has decided to open as many as 70 new sand quarries in the state to meet the growing demand for sand from the public, industry and for government related building projects. These quarries are to be located in Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts besides the existing 19 sand quarries in operation in the state.
The PMK leader, also referring to the public interest litigation he had moved in the Madras High Court in this regard leading to notices being issued to the government and authorities concerned, said, “It is an open secret that the rapacious sand mining by the government in the state has already affected the livelihood resources of millions of farmers, caused irreparable damage to the river system and water bodies and attracted stinging criticism from all sections of the public.”
