The girls, all students of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School at Panapakkam, were identified as Sankari, Manisha, Deepa and Revathi.

Police said that the four came to school on Friday on their bicycles as usual and after leaving their bags in the class, left for Nangamangalam near Melapulam Pudur.

Their classmates alerted the school authorities about the absence of the four girls. After searching for them on the campus, the authorities contacted the girls’ parents. When the girls could not be found, teams from Kaveripakkam, Nemili and Avalur police stations were called in. The DSPs of Arakkonam and Ranipet, Kuthalingam and Vijayakumar, also rushed to the spot, along with Nemili Tahsildar Baskaran.

Locals passing by a well noticed the bicycles parked and informed the police and the Fire and Rescue personnel fished out the bodies.

The locals refused to allow the bodies to be taken to Vellore GH and relented only when police promised action against the guilty. An NDRF team was also called in. Vellore SP P Pagalavan has ordered four special teams to investigate, while collector SA Raman has ordered an RDO inquiry. An inquiry has also been ordered by the School Education Directorate.
