AIADMK leaders differ on Coast Guard firing at fishermen
The leaders of the ruling dispensation exposed that there was no consensus among them over the Indian Coast Guard opening fire on Indian fishermen off Rameswaram Sea. While a senior leader and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker said he will take up the issue with the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, a state Minister seconded her statement by saying her version holds water.

State Forest Minister Dindigul C Sreenivasan seconded the views of Nirmala Sitharaman in the incident. “I have nothing more to comment on it. She’s the one in-charge of the Defence, and is aware of the incident. She would have commented only after knowing everything that had transpired,” he said.
He added that the fisherfolk brethren were of a different opinion, and that the issue would be ironed out between them and the Centre.
Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha and AIADMK MP M Thambidurai said he would take it up with Nirmala Sitharaman when he meets the latter in Delhi, and would clear the air in the firing issue.
While referring to the incident, she had stated that no fishermen were fired upon by any Coast Guard ship.
“No such bullet is available with the CG. I don’t know from where the bullet had come. At the same time, what the fisherman had said (that he was attacked) was true. It is good for all of us to talk after a thorough inquiry. I understand the travails of our fishermen and it needs to be found out who fired at them,” she said refuting the incident.
It is pertinent note that Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the latter’s intervention to ensure the safety of fishermen about the firing incident while terming the incident as ‘an unfortunate’ one.
The CM observed that the innocent fishermen were fishing in the territorial waters in the Palk Bay.
Palaniswami had pointed out that Pitchai, a fisherman, was injured in his left hand, and a bullet was found in the fishing vessel, and the same had been handed over to the Mandapam Marine Police.
At present, Marine Police had registered a case under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC and Section 27(1) of the Arms Act, 1959 against the Coast Guard in pursuant to the complaint from the injured fishermen.
