Minor relief for Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor

In a big relief to Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor A Ganapathy, the Madras High Court on Monday stayed the probe on a complaint lodged against him for offence under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act.

Justice MS Ramesh granted the interim relief, while admitting a writ petition from Ganapathy, seeking to quash the criminal proceedings pending before the Vadavalli police station in Coimbatore. The complaint was registered by the Vadavalli Sub-inspector (SI) based on a complaint from Dr Lakshmi Praba on November 6.

The judge on pointing out that the complaint was received by the SI at 9 p.m. on November 6 and a case was registered immediately by the SI, who was not the designated officer to do so under the Act, said “I am unable to comprehend as to how the SI could straight away register the complaint without holding preliminary enquiry.”

“In spite of his knowledge that the person named in the FIR is a Constitutional authority holding a high rank and responsible post. This hasty action of the SI is ex-facie lamentable,” the judge added.

Earlier, petitioner’s counsel contended that Lakshmi Praba’s complaint was motivated as she was aggrieved by the VC’s legitimate actions.
